A forest practices watershed analysis addresses the cumulative effects that forest practices, such as timber harvests or road buidling, may have on cultural resources and public resources, such as fish, water, and capital improvements.
The Siuslaw Watershed Council focuses on salmon conservation because salmon are a keystone species, which means they are a more sensitive species in the environment. “Salmon are an indicator of watershed functions, so if the habitat is good for salmon, then it’s good for many other species,” Tome said.

Planning implications of a habitat improvement project conducted on a Newfoundland stream (M.C. van Zyll de Jong, I.G. Cowx and D.A. Scruton). The watershed council was awarded funds for three projects including: • Restoration of Cleveland Creek, a salmon-bearing tributary to the Siuslaw River.
The creek passes through a culvert under Highway 36 in Tide, but it is undersized, which makes it difficult for coho salmon, steelhead, cutthroat trout and Pacific lamprey to pass through it. This project is a partnership among a number of organizations and agencies, including the Siuslaw National Forest, Siuslaw Watershed Council, Siuslaw Institute, Elkton Community Education Center, Con-federated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, Confederated Tribes of the Siletz Indians, Ecotrust, Oregon Watershed Enhancement.

Here meteorological and hydrological drought effects increase day by day along with demand for groundwater irrigation, turning .This makes this project in the lower reaches of the watershed all the more important as it focuses on areas of degradation in an otherwise healthy watershed.
These improvements in the lower watershed will provide slow-water habitat that is otherwise lacking for salmon juveniles during a critical stage in the salmon life cycle.
